Arrival at the Maheshwar Fort

Journey of the soul

I was extremely excited for my trip to Maheshwar from the day I received my acceptance letter. The journey started quite before I boarded the flight to Indore from deciding and packing for the place. Clothes, stationeries, electronic gadgets, chargers all that I would need to start anew at Rehwa Society. There were three option from which I could choose to come here in Maheshwar; if you plan to visit Rehwa Society through airways the nearest airport to Maheshwar is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport in Indore which is about 90 to 100 km away. Numerous flights operate from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai as well as Delhi Airport to Indore. The flight time approximately stretches from 1.5 hours to 2 hours. Indigo and Air India have frequent flights on this route from which you can choose and decide your itinerary. Once you reach the airport at Indore you can easily take a taxi or a bus which would take proximately 2 to 3 hours to reach Maheshwar. The Indore bus stand and taxi services also connect to various states and cities from which you can directly come to Maheshwar or Indore. If you choose to drive or book a taxi to Maheshwar from Mumbai it takes around 9 to 12 hours with a distance of approximately 514 to 520 kms. The most efficient road would be via NH 48 and NH 52. If you plan to come to Maheshwar by train you can come to bharwaha or Indore which are the major railway stations nearest to Maheshwar, as Maheshwar does not have its own railway station Indore Railway Station is the most relevant option as most trains do not stop at barwaha. From Indore to Maheshwar the fastest route from Mumbai to Maheshwar would be a flight to Indore followed by a taxi or a bus to Maheshwar. Most convenient and official mode of transport would be a private car from Indore which was the one that I choose. This would take you around it 2 hours to reach to Maheshwar. This is not only a budget friendly option but also the safest for a solo Traveller or a female visitor.

The challenges that I faced while travelling from Pune airport to Indore were majorly due to delays at the airport due to gate changes and overcrowding. I was extremely exhausted as my flight was at 5 in the morning and I had been there at the airport sis 2:00 a.m., did not sleep the entire night. I booked a cab from the Indore airport to Maheshwar directly which was the most efficient and safest option for me that took only 2 hours for the commute. I was really excited to visit the society and the a Ahileshwar Temple that was situated just beside the Narmada Ghat. I was literally mesmerized by the serene surroundings at the Ahilya Fort and the Temple. The fort was constructed in the 18th century by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar whose reign was celebrated in the Malwa Kingdom from 1765 to 1796. While touring the Fort we can see the information about the architectural buildings, temples, administrative and political strategies and the ruling period of each of the kings. A larger than life statue of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar is situated at the fort which was celebrated during the 300th anniversary of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar.

The beautiful Ghats of Narmada were the most alluring place for me. Seeing all the devotees taking a holy bath I could not resist myself and jumped into the water. It was a great swim along the Ghats of Maheshwar. The freedom, the calmness and the peaceful atmosphere instantly gained my favour and I was all set to start my term at the society. As it is the summer season the climate is hot, humid and the harsh sun compelled me to stay indoors during the afternoon. But the site of Ahileshwar temple during the golden hour and in the early morning is worth a visit for sure. The sound of the working looms, the rhythm with which they operate is absolutely divine. The melodious birds singing  in the morning uplift the spirits of the visitors for sure. As the Narmada river is just beside the city of Maheshwar it rained almost everyday during the first week that I was in Maheshwar. This smell of the soil was the real game changer and I used to go to the ghat just to witness this one of a kind experience everyday. I had the authentic food of Maheshwar prepared by one of the weavers family working at Rehwa Society. The original taste and the simplicity of the food and the people here has humbled me in no time.

As I lived inside the main tatbandi of the fort I had to constantly go down and come up for the smallest things including food, bottled water or even going to the ghat for a stroll. This was the time when I went out and had to do so much walking just to get a samosa. Other than that I always eat at the Laboo's cafe as they have an excellent option of the thali and I also had my coconut chutney and chakli with me so that I would not encounter any unpleasant experience with food atleast. Laboos is basically a fort owned restaurant and guest house which was located just outside Rehwa Society whiich turned out to be a  boon for me as looking for food outside the fort and commuting each and everyday for three times would be a great hussel. The first week was concluded with a blast and a cant wait to share more experiences throughout my journey here !
